Lenora Doss carried the heavier cardboard box up the second flight of stairs, her fingers digging through the brown packing tape where the bottom was threatening to give. Behind her, eleven-year-old Eli carried the stainless-steel kettle in one hand and a stack of dog-eared paperback books pressed against his chest in the other.

“Eli, watch your footing on that middle riser,” Lenora said without turning around, her breath hitching in the cold stairwell. “The brass trim is coming loose.”

“I see it, Ma,” Eli replied, his sneakers squeaking on the fresh vinyl runner. “Is this one really ours?”

The question stung in a quiet, familiar place. For seven months, ‘theirs’ had meant Room 114 at the municipal extended-stay lodge out near the highway interchange—two twin beds with stiff polyester spreads, a mini-fridge that rattled like an engine through the night, and a front desk manager who looked at Eli like he was an unpaid bill.

But Apartment 2B at Mill Court was different. Mill Court was a three-story brick building on the corner of 4th and Elm, built in the 1920s for railroad machinists and recently rehabilitated under the city’s affordable tenant relocation program. Lenora had taken a second job as the assistant property administrator for the management company—filing lease renewals, verifying income affidavits, and coordinating key handoffs—in exchange for a rent credit that brought the two-bedroom unit within her reach.

She set the box down on the doormat, slid the brass key into the deadbolt of Apartment 2B, and turned it. The mechanism clicked with a solid, satisfying clunk.

Lenora pushed the door open. The late afternoon winter sun was slanting through the clean double-hung windows, warming the honey-colored oak flooring. The apartment smelled of fresh water-based paint and lemon wax. In the living room, a cast-iron radiator hissed softly, radiating a steady, comforting heat that filled the quiet space.

Eli dropped his books onto the kitchen counter and ran down the short hallway. “Ma! There’s a bedroom with a real closet! And a door that shuts!”

Lenora stood in the entryway, her throat tight with a relief so heavy it felt like exhaustion. For the first time in two years, she could unpack the good towels. For the first time in two years, she didn’t have to check the expiration date on an emergency housing voucher.

She closed the hallway door and began opening the box of kitchen essentials. She had just placed the salt cellar on the sill when a metallic scratching sound came from the lock behind her.

Lenora froze. The deadbolt turned from the outside with a smooth, practiced twist. The heavy entry door swung inward, and a woman in a wet winter parka stood in the threshold, holding an identical brass key in her gloved hand and an overnight bag over her shoulder.

Behind her stood a teenage girl, clutching a folder of worn documents.

“Excuse me,” the woman said, her voice trembling between confusion and panic as she looked past Lenora into the warm, unpacked living room. “Who are you, and why are your things inside my apartment?”
